Mexican Fan palm, Sky Duster

A vigorous, spectacular palm with a wide crown of impressive fan shaped fronds on a tall stout trunk. An impressive specimen for a large conservatory but also survives outdoors in mild gardens with winter protection, as any frost scorched leaves can be quickly replaced by rapid new growth in Spring.

The Mexican Fan Palm is a tall, vigorous palm that quickly grows a stout trunk, albeit thinner than its sister species Washingtonia filifera. Widely grown worldwide, the Skyduster is probably most familiar from the avenue plantings in California. Trunks are topped by a crown of large (1.5m wide or more) fan leaves that have loose threaded margins and often a purplish brown patch at the base of the leaf stalk - another feature lacking in Washingtonia filifera. Although often scorched by frost below around -5C or so Washingtonia robusta quickly regrows when the weather improves and replaces the damaged leaves.

Frequently asked questions about garden palm trees

When should I plant a palm tree in the ground?

In the UK, it's always ok to plant a palm tree in the ground. As long as the soil is not frozen, with a bit of preparation you can plant your palm tree anytime.

However, ideally you would plant either in early spring or late autumn.

If planting in the middle of the summer, you may have to be careful with watering: soak the root ball of the plant for a few hours before planting, water the hole thoroughly and once the hole has been backfilled, water again to ensure a good contact between the soil and the roots. Water frequently as the soil tends to dry really fast in summer. A couple of times a week should be ok for newly planted palm trees.

GENERAL CARE

Most palms need tropical or subtropical temperatures, but there are some suitable for planting outdoors in the British Isles. Hardy palms are invaluable as structural plants in tropical-style gardens and look effective when planted with bananas, bamboos and New Zealand flax.

PLANTING

Hardy palm trees can be planted at any time of the year, but ideally it should be done during spring and summer.

Try to dig a hole a good deal bigger than the root-ball, which should be given a good soak before planting. Back-fill the hole with a free draining mix

Water thoroughly. This will be beneficial to the establishment of the root system. If planting during a dry spell, water the hole first, allow to drain, plant, back-fill, and then water again.

Outdoor plants pot sizes
Outdoor plants pot sizes

With items such as ferns, juvenile tree ferns and herbaceous plants it is difficult to give the exact size of each species when such a wide range of plants are grown so we specify standard pot sizes to give an indication of the size and/or age of the plant you are buying.

Sometimes the pot size might vary slightly from the standard or we might listed as 2-3 litre pot, depending on the growers we purchased them from. However, the sizes of the plants are similar in height and spread.

Sometimes the plants might be photographed in decorative pots. However, please bear in mind that our plants are kept in plastic nursery pots.

Plants measurements
Plant measurements

For the outdoor plants, that are meant to be planted in the ground, the height of the pot is excluded from the measurement. The height is measured from the top of the pot to the tallest leaf or branch of the plant.

All plants are measured when brought to our nursery, however, due to natural factors, the actual size of the plant might change over time due to adjustments to the environment. When picking multiple plants for an order, we aim to pick matching plants.

Plant warranties
WARRANTIES

We can guarantee that the plants leave our nursery disease free, but weather and local conditions might affect their survival. Make sure you always make an informed purchasing decision.

The plants that leave our nursery are in the best condition, free of disease. Kept in adequate conditions (positioning and care), the plants are guaranteed for 3 months if they are planted in the ground or one year if they are kept in their original pots. Return policy applies only to plants that are in their original pots.

Very pleased with the quality of this plant - we have had palms from The Palm Centre on a few occasions and they are always excellent. This one was particularly large and very healthy. I would also like to mention the Courier Service - the guy who brought the plants went out of his way to be helpful. Our house is tucked away down a long drive; he found us - no problem, he had a special trolley to wheel the pallet down the drive - no problem, he unloaded the pallet - no problem AND he took it away - no problem. He was the happiest most helpful Delivery Driver we have seen for weeks so a big THANK YOU to him and to the team at The Palm Centre for some lovely plants once again.

I ordered a trachycarpus (one with a 50-60cm trunk). It arrived only a few days later, well-packed and was very easy to plant. He looks fantastic at the side of my lily pool and is making me want to buy more exotics!
