(2 customer reviews)

From: £27.95

Probably the most popular hedging plant of the last 20 years, Photinia x fraseri is a large hybrid Photinia of P. glabra and P. serrulata. This robust evergreen shrub has delightful red young foliage and heads of long lasting creamy flowers in late spring. Perfectly hardy for most UK gardens, often looking best in sunnier spots.

Photinia x fraseri ‘Robusta Compacta’, also known as The Christmas Berry, differs from the species in that it has a tighter and more compact habit than the ubiquitous Photinia ‘Red Robin’.

Plant Biography

Native to Southern China, the Photinia x fraseri name honours the Fraser Nursery in Birmingham, Alabama where the hybrid originated around 1940.

New growth in spring emerges a bright, luminous red in a showy display lasting about 2 to 3 weeks. These leathery red leaves, with finely serrated margins, gradually change to a glossy dark green colour. Around late April, heads of creamy white flowers add to the show just as the new foliage starts to lose its colour.
