The common fig is an attractive, hardy, large shrub or small tree with huge lobed green fig-shaped (!) leaves and delicious edible fruits, for which it has been cultivated for literally millennia. In the UK it has many uses and, if grown for fruit, needs special pruning, root restriction and, ideally, wall protection. However it is often overlooked as an ornamental: simply for foliage it can be allowed to grow ad lib (or just pruning for shape) to give a touch of the Mediterranean to mixed plantings. Try Ficus carica in dry shade for real exotica!
