The spectacular orange blooms of this South African icon are found in chic floral displays the world over. This plant makes a carefree drought and dry air tolerant plant for the conservatory, summer patio or south facing window, forming slow growing clusters of blue-green sculptural foliage.

Water when the top several cm of soil feel dry to touch, being careful to err on the drier side in winter. This slow growing species does take a while to reach flowering age, but mature clumps can reach 1.5m tall and make imposing specimens.

Although Strelitzia reginae will survive outdoors year round in a mild garden, damaged leaves take a long while to be replaced so it is better to bring into a bright spot for winter.

Frequently asked questions about houseplants

How often should I feed my house plants?

With some house plants, you can feed them according to the label on the feed. It may look like it's not enough and you could be tempted to add more than the recommended dose, but do remember that the correct dosages will prevent the roots from getting burned from too much concentration.

As a rule of thumb, once a month, a mild solution of a balanced organic fertiliser is ideal to be applied in the growing season.

How often should I water my house plants?

Watering houseplants is always a tricky business. Some love to have their soil moist at all times, others like to be on the drier side. Also, every home is different and winters are not the same as summers.

Conditions differ throughout the year, all over the country and plants have different preferences.

Make sure you read the care instructions that come with the plant and adjust that according to your home.

Outdoor plants pot sizes
Indoor plants pot sizes

Sometimes the pot size might vary slightly from the standard or we might listed as 2-3 litre pot, depending on the growers we purchased them from. However, the sizes of the plants are similar in height and spread.

Sometimes the plants might be photographed in decorative pots. However, please bear in mind that our plants are kept in plastic nursery pots.

Plants measurements
Plant measurements

For all the indoor plants, the height of the pot is included in the listed height. The height is measured from the bottom of the pot to the highest leaf or branch of the plant.

Due to natural growth, the size of the plants might vary slightly. All plants are measured and categorised when they are brought into our nursery, however, over time, the actual size might change due to growth, adjustment to the environment etc.

Plant warranties

Thanks following my call the plant arrived early so no problems with delivery. It was well boxed and in fairly good order. However just two points:- The plastic pot was split due to the fact the plant was pot bound, at least we know it growing well. The other point is that I found the biggest snail I have ever seen on the leaves of the plant. Does The Palm Centre breed them? Some of the leaves were effected but no great disaster, I hope? Minor point not in flower??? Off to buy a suitable pot for the plant. Paul
Hi Paul, Thank you for your feedback. Indeed, the S.reginae are usually kept pot bound while in our nursery. You'll find that this is the case with most of the garden centres and nurseries. The strong roots of the S.reginae sometimes do manage to break the pot. We recommend repotting the all Strelitzia plants as soon as possible after receiving them to trigger growth. Our colleagues do their best to clean the plants of unwanted "travellers", however sometimes, some do manage to sneak through. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by that. As for the last point, the plant you purchased in a 12 litre pot is not a mature plant yet to bare flowers. It will require a few more repottings in the coming years before getting to its ultimate size (full maturity). At that point, keeping it pot pound and providing a feed high on potassium will encourage it to flower.
