Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ is a relatively recent New Zealand Flax cultivar with leaves in the most remarkable shade of purple-brown that is almost black. One of the more compact Phormiums, this has an elegant weeping habit that makes it eminently suited to growing in a pot.

The Phormium ‘Platts Black’ is a horticultural hybrid of the Phormium family, with spiky leaves ranging from dark chocolate to black.

A ‘dwarf’ compared to other varieties of Phormium, it can grow to 1 – 1.2 m in height.

A robust, evergreen perennial, this Phormium can become a stunning focal point in the garden, especially when combined with brightly coloured plants.

Expert Tip

It is unrivalled as a contrast plant against silver foliage plants or as a background for pretty well any flower colour you care to choose so maybe best used in a mixed border where it will have outstanding presence. The best colour will be shown in a good soil that doesn't dry completely.

The Phormium ‘Platts Black’ thrives almost anywhere in a well drained soil. From full sun to full shade, average or low moisture soils, even very poor and sandy soils don’t deter this wunderkind of a plant.

It’s a great addition to borders or planters, and it is the perfect plant for a coastal garden as it is salt and drought tolerant.
