Plant Biography

Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ is a cultivar of the species Ophiopogon planiscapus which is native to East Asia and has been cultivated for centuries. The exact origins of the ‘Nigrescens’ cultivar are not well-documented, but it likely emerged through natural variations or selective breeding to enhance its dark, blackish-purple foliage.

Much beloved of Garden Designers, the Black Mondo Grass is simply stunning – one of the truest black shades available in the plant world.

Black spidery mounds will spread by runners into dense colonies – mauve flowers in late summer are followed by glossy black berries.

It provides an unsurpassed colour contrast with practically anything you choose to grow with it – be it yellows, greens, greys.

For the best colour and overall performance grow Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ in full sun in a moist soil – such a star plant deserves good treatment.
