Nolina hibernicaNolina 'La Siberica'
Known under it's 'working title' of Nolina 'La Siberica' since it's discovery around 20 years ago, this beautiful plant has since been formally described under the name Nolina hibernica - hibernica meaning 'wintery'.
And that gives the clue why it is the best trunked nolina to grow in UK conditions, as its mountain homeland at 3000m altitude in pine forests of Northeast Mexico get cold and wet with frequent snow and ice.
Lucky for us, then, that it is also one of the most attractive nolina spp, with a dense crown of arching, twisted leaves that eventually die off to form a persistent petticoat of dried parchment-like leaves.
In time single trunks may divide, making the plant doubly, even trebly, handsome.
