Plant Biography
Originating in East Asia, China, Korea and Japan, the Miscanthus sinensis is a dense clump forming grass that has attracted the attention of gardeners world wide due to its unusual appearance.
Compared to other grasses, the Chinese silver grass is suitable for most types of soil and will thrive in most conditions.
Care & Size Guidance
Miscanthus is a perennial grass species that forms clumps and lacks invasive spreading rhizomes, making it suitable for gardens of any size.
While many Miscanthus varieties do not flower in cooler European summers, this specific cultivar, a variation of Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus,’ stands out for its elegance and versatility.
Its slender green blades feature delicate cream margins and gracefully arch at the tips, creating a fountain-like effect. In warmer summers, it additionally produces reddish-brown flowers that bloom in October and last throughout the winter, providing an extra reward.
Feeding the grasses
Grasses, in general, have really low requirements for fertilisers. They can thrive in any soil, as long as it’s well drained.
For a thriving garden, a high nitrogen, slow release fertiliser is encouraged. Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
