Plant Biography

Loropetalum chinense is native to Japan and south-eastern Asia including southern China. It was introduced to UK in 1880.

In China, from where specimens in cultivation originate, this species is mainly or wholly confined to warm regions and low altitudes – hence needing winter protection in colder gardens. It might prove hardier if cultivars were developed from Japanese populations, which grow in harsher environments and may be hardier.

Expert Tip

This unusual plant creates wonderful year round interest, and works brilliantly as contrast amongst greener planting schemes - perhaps throwing in a few other dark purple accents like Salvia 'Caradonna' or Phormium 'Platts Black' to tie everything together.

Care & Size Guidance

Better for milder gardens, this will thrive in a sheltered sunny spot away from frost pockets and harsh winds. Loropetalum has few pests and requires no pruning except to maintain desired size.

Very competitively priced plant in a good size pot and excellent condition. Lovely leaf colour and will produce beautiful dark red flowers.
