Plant Biography

Hailing from Central America and the Caribbean, in the wild this plant is found growing up the trunks of other trees. Given that many of its older leaves remain close to the shaded forest floor, it’s tolerant of low light.

It’s easy to propagate with cuttings, allowing you to turn one plant into a living wall with relative ease, or share the love by giving them to your friends!

Though it is tricky to achieve indoors, given the right conditions Philodendron scandens can produce white flowers once it has matured enough.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

In the wild these climbers can grow to about 6 metres long. In the home, if they grow too large for their space they’re very easy to trim and propagate with the cuttings!

If the leaves of your Philodendron begin to droop, it can suggest either overwatering or underwatering, whilst yellowing leaves suggest the plant is getting too much bright, direct sunlight that is scorching its leaves.

Feed in spring to late summer with a houseplant fertiliser.

Expert Tip

Amongst the easiest houseplants to grow, Philodendron scandens prefers a room with bright indirect light, but is tolerant of some shade. However, in darker locations the plant tends to become leggier.
Variegation explained

Variegation explained

Variegation in the Aroid family of plants is a common feature and the Philodendron scandens is no exception.

The variegation in the ‘Brasil’ philodendron, however is not always stable and it can go either way: some leaves will revert to the dark deep green of the P.scandens, while others will slowly grow on stems that are turning full bright yellow.

This behaviour is usually found on vines that have had their growth point cut and the new branches are coming out from the nodes below the cut.

Very prompt delivery. The plant is very healthy with new leaves ready to pop. Would have preferred packing to be upright not horizontal. Made quite a mess unpacking. Not keen on the plastic. However the plant is great.

Jean R (verified owner)

carefully packaged
beautiful plant with plenty of growing tips
new leaves about to open, excellent range of variegation
only slight negative – leaves needed cleaning to remove water stains – could have been done before dispatch
Plenty of growing room left in nursery pot so no need to stress plant further by re-potting – just place and enjoy!
I would buy
