Hesperaloe parviflora is a yucca like succulent, forming rosettes of thin, arching leaves. Ideal for rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens.

The hairy clumps of red yucca are adorned in summer with slender flower stalks bearing coral red flowers.

Plant Biography

Native to the Chihuahuan desert in West Texas, this yucca has gain popularity in cultivation due to its drought tolerance, heat resistance and low maintenance needs.

In its natural habitat, the flamboyantly coral red to pink flowers, rising above the plant to about 1.5 – 2.0 m, are being a great source of nectar for the hummingbirds.

The species name is an indication of its flower size, “parviflora” in English translating to “small flowers”.

Unlike other yuccas, the Hersperaloe parviflora has spineless leaves with fibrous threads running along their edges.

It loves a sunny dry garden, with sandy, dry and sharply draining soils. In winter and during drought periods, the leaves get a reddish-bronze tint.

It requires no attention or supplemental irrigation once established.
