Phormium are a genus of only two species: Phormium tenax which is native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, and Phormium colensoi which is native only to New Zealand.

Known as New Zealand Flax, these plants have historically been used by the Māori people as a source of fibre for creating textiles, rope and sails.

More recently they have become ornamentally popular around the world, becoming beloved for their spectacular form, leading to the creation of many new cultivars in recent years.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Phormiums are undemanding plants that thrive in a sunny border with moist soil, or planted in a container. Once established they become drought tolerant.

Make sure to leave some space between the Phormium and surrounding plants as the Phormium’s large leaves can take over their space.

Phormium are generally hardy for normal winters but mulching around the base and using fleece jackets can help protect them during particularly cold spells.

1 customer review for Phormium tenax ‘Evening Glow’

The plant itself was as described, but the delivery and customer service is awful. I was charged 9.95 next working day delivery and was despatched on a Thursday. The plant arrived on the following Tuesday. No-one responds to my emails about this, other than an outdated Out of office auto-reply.

Palm Centre reply: Hi Richard, we apologise for the late delivery. Indeed, there was a problem with the delivery of this order. Once despatched it was out for delivery 3 times from de delivery depot. The third time is when the driver was able to deliver the order as there was someone in the house. We have checked our email account settings and none of us have an out-of-office auto-reply. You can send your email to [email protected] or call us on 020 8255 6191. Thank you.
