Phormium tenax 'Purpureum' is a long established cultivar of New Zealand flax whose robust, spear-like leaves are a dusky brownish-purple colour, glaucous on the reverse, and margined with a distinct but fine line of orange brown. They just seem to explode out of the soil. Few plants can offer such dramatic form or presence and they offer a unique contrast in colour and form to pretty well anything else that can be grown in the temperate garden. They will grow in any soil but develop the best colour in one that is moist, rich and free-draining.
