Melissa officinalis is a herbaceous, semi-evergreen shrubby plant related to mint that grown for its attractive, highly scented foliage - leaves are oval, serrated edged with deeply impressed veins and smell strongly of lemon when bruised. White to pale mauve flowers are produced on upright shoots in summer and are highly attractive to bees. The leaves have been long used to make herbal infusion drinks and as a lemon flavouring. It has also been used in traditional folk medicine for treatment of intestinal problems and is the source of lemon balm oil.
