The Canary Island Date Palm is a ubiquitous sight in warm temperate to tropical places world wide, where it is a trouble free tree for any situation. Huge feather leaves waft airily in the wind and lend an air of the tropics wherever they are seen. Although tolerant of huge neglect, given a position in full sun and plenty of moisture Phoenix canariensis will grow vigorously and demand space with a huge crown spread developing in a few years. Also be mindful of the small stunted leaflets near the base of the leaves which are as sharp as ice picks!

GENERAL CARE

Most palms need tropical or subtropical temperatures, but there are some suitable for planting outdoors in the British Isles. Hardy palms are invaluable as structural plants in tropical-style gardens and look effective when planted with bananas, bamboos and New Zealand flax.

PLANTING

Hardy palm trees can be planted at any time of the year, but ideally it should be done during spring and summer.

Try to dig a hole a good deal bigger than the root-ball, which should be given a good soak before planting. Back-fill the hole with a free draining mix

Water thoroughly. This will be beneficial to the establishment of the root system. If planting during a dry spell, water the hole first, allow to drain, plant, back-fill, and then water again.

First time I have ordered from the Palm Centre and won't be the last. Their prices were so reasonable compared to other companies I thought the plants might not be top quality but I was wrong. Beautiful, strong, healthy plants which are thriving. Thank you Palm Centre.

We have just planted our new Canary Island Date palm. It looks amazing, it was well packaged, it is larger than expected and very healthy looking. This is our third palm, we purchased 2 smaller ones in 2015 along with a number of Cordylines which are all doing well in our Kent coastal garden. Thank you.

We took delivery of our wonderful Date Palm in October 2016. Very well packaged. It has done well through the winter with no special protection measures and is now looking magnificent. Lovely plant which we are looking forward to enjoying for years to come. Many thanks to the Palm Centre.

Awesome hardy palm. Bought it from The Palm Centre at 6ft in 2009 however it died back during the winter 2010/11 (when London/Essex was hit with 12+ inches of snow) but slowly grew back and now (2016) is a nice 8+ ft tall and growing at least 3-4 new fronds per year. Would definitely recommend this lovely palm (Just watch out for the spines at the base of the fronds which can be very sharp).

An excellent palm for a very sheltered garden. I have grown my Phoenix for the last ten years in my Norfolk garden with success. This is mainly due to having very good drainage and wrapping the palm with fleece from late November till March. Make sure you protect the growing point with fleece also which works with other palms like Butia. The large specimen phoenix in Norwich have come through the winter of 2010, although they lost most of their outer leaves have now recovered.

My attempt to grow this palm outside in Hampshire failed, and I think this was mainly to do with the winter wet as the central growing point simply rotted after 2 winters. Nonetheless I now grow several specimens in pots, moving them outside for the summer and overwintering in a cool greenhouse where they have comfortably survived -2c when fairly dry. A very exotic looking palm, albeit very spiky, I am considering trying to plant these specimens outside again and find some way of sheltering them
