The imposing Chilean Wine Palm has the widest trunk of any palm species and, remarkably, is also one of the hardiest. Meaning that this beautiful behemoth will grow happily, albeit slowly, throughout much of the UK. In its homeland Jubaea chilensis is now considered an endangered species due, in part, to over-exploitation in the past for the manufacture of 'palm wine'. This is made by fermenting the collected sap which involves cutting down the whole tree. There is a majestic specimen of Jubaea chilensis growing in the Temperate House at Kew Gardens which is the largest indoor plant in the world.

GENERAL CARE

Most palms need tropical or subtropical temperatures, but there are some suitable for planting outdoors in the British Isles. Hardy palms are invaluable as structural plants in tropical-style gardens and look effective when planted with bananas, bamboos and New Zealand flax.

PLANTING

Hardy palm trees can be planted at any time of the year, but ideally it should be done during spring and summer.

Try to dig a hole a good deal bigger than the root-ball, which should be given a good soak before planting. Back-fill the hole with a free draining mix

Water thoroughly. This will be beneficial to the establishment of the root system. If planting during a dry spell, water the hole first, allow to drain, plant, back-fill, and then water again.

I bought a Judaea chilensis 17 months ago. It was a beatufil palm in excellent condition, well wrapped. It has since grown 30cms in a north east England climate producing 5 new leaves. It still looks amazing although there are a few brown tips to a small number of the older leaves. I"m confidentially expecting a further 30cms of growth this year which will only add to the exotic look to this specimen. Thank you Palmcentre.

Fantastic palm that really is hardy in our temperate climate. Will withstand heavy snow and frost once established and larger enough. More of these palms should be planted in the UK. My Jubaea has come through some very harsh winters recently without hardly any damage in my Norfolk garden.
