They need bright indirect light, good humidity and consistent temperatures, with a tendency to drop leaves in less ideal conditions. Water when the top few cm of soil is dry to the touch and make sure the soil never sits in standing water.

Feed in the growing season and be sure not to over water in the darker months. It may be advisable to turn regularly if the sunlight reaches it from one side only, and foliage is likely to burn if kept in direct sun.

Frequently asked questions about houseplants

How often should I feed my house plants?

With some house plants, you can feed them according to the label on the feed. It may look like it's not enough and you could be tempted to add more than the recommended dose, but do remember that the correct dosages will prevent the roots from getting burned from too much concentration.

As a rule of thumb, once a month, a mild solution of a balanced organic fertiliser is ideal to be applied in the growing season.

How often should I water my house plants?

Watering houseplants is always a tricky business. Some love to have their soil moist at all times, others like to be on the drier side. Also, every home is different and winters are not the same as summers.

Conditions differ throughout the year, all over the country and plants have different preferences.

Make sure you read the care instructions that come with the plant and adjust that according to your home.

Palm trees are one of the most popular choices for indoor plants to grow. They provide the majestic beauty of a tropical garden and the ease of care. The less mature palms can be used as a desk plant for a small office and even in bathrooms of some homes.

An inevitable problem encountered by growing palms indoors is the amount of dust that builds up on the leaves over time.

The soil in the pots should be kept moist and never be allowed to dry out. During the summer months you will be watering as much as twice per week to maintain moisture levels, whereas in winter you should water sparingly.
