Plant Biography

The Fargesia scabrida ‘Asian Wonder’ originates in the highlands of South China and Nothern Vietnam, primarily in the mountainous areas. They are an essential food for the giant pandas.

Because of their clumping habit, many species of Fargesia are used as ornamental plants and new cultivars are brought into commercial cultivation every year.

Though there are over 80 species in this family, genetic analysis have shown that this with some of the Fargesia species it’s a case of ‘convergent evolution’, with different species evolving to have similar looks and behaviours.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Fargesia scarbrida ‘Asian Wonder’ has a clumping habit, making it ideal for container or open ground planting. They tend to be a more resilient bamboo compared to other members of the family and can grow fairly fast to develop dense clumps.

The Red Bamboo is shallow rooted, therefore mulching to maintain moisture in the soil is highly recommended. It rarely grows over 3 m, with a slight arching habit. The new growth appears purple, maturing into olive green with orange culm sheaths.

When planted in containers, the bamboo will require more frequent watering due to the plants root clump being close to the surface.

Feeding Fargesia plants

All bamboo plants are heavy feeders and periodic application of fertiliser is highly recommended to keep the plants thriving.

Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
