Euphorbia amygdaloides ‘Purpurea’

An incredibly tough evergreen perennial to 40cm+ capable of spreading even in dry shade, though the beautifully rich, purple-tinted new growth is brightest with some sun and makes a dramatic contrast with the lime-green heads of flowers in spring. A cultivar of our native Wood Spurge, it is a great plant for pollinators.

Plant Biography

Euphorbia amygdaloides ‘Purpurea’ is a selected cultivar of the native Wood Spurge with beautifully rich, purple-tinted new growth that makes a dramatic contrast with the lime-green heads of flowers in spring.

It is one tough cookie capable of spreading around in dry, deep shade via underground runners but, nevertheless, colourful enough to be considered as a front of border plant. Surround it with daffodils for more drama! Like all Spurges, all parts are poisonous and the milky sap can be irritant.
