Encephalartos ferox is a smaller growing cycad, usually with a subterranean trunk but occasionally very old specimens will emerge above ground. The caudex can reach 35cm across and it sports a head of pinnate leaves, each bearing numerous dark green, spiny-tipped holly-like leaves. Zululand Cycad is an ideal candidate for the back of a conservatory. It will tolerate drier air and a bright position and enjoys the compost to be kept quite moist when compared to most cycads. In the fullness of time you may enjoy one of its finest features - brightly coloured flowering cones!
