Plant Biography

A deliberate hybrid raised in 1982 at Hillier nursery, Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ is an improvement over both parents. It has more finely cut leaves, a more compact growth habit and larger flowers than C. ternata, and is hardier and generally more attractive than C. dumosa var arizonica. All in all a superb and useful evergreen mid-sized shrub.

The long lasting white spring flowers of Choisya usually repeat again in late summer, and their scent is the cause of one common name – Mock Orange. Whilst these shrubs are in the Rue family (Rutaceae), they are related to orange trees and share the heady intoxicating power of their perfume. ‘Aztec Pearl’ has lightly pink flushed buds which only add to the charm of this cultivar.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

This is a particularly neat and compact cultivar, which should not require any pruning to achieve an attractive form. Slow to reach its modest full size, this is a great choice for smaller gardens as hedging or specimen shrubs, or in smart container displays.

A sunny position away from wind prevents leaf tip burn: although fully hardy, late frosts may nip new growth. On heavier soils it may be worth planting in raised beds or similar to avoid the worst of winter damp at the root.

Expert Tip

The filigree finery of the slender leaflets make 'Aztec Pearl' a great foil for plants with bold contrasting shapes such as displays of tulips.
