As the name suggests, an exceptionally elegant little feather-leafed palm from the rainforest understory in southern Mexico and Guatemala that forms slender, reedy trunks. Tolerant of shade and dry air, compact and slow growing.

It has been grown as a houseplant since Victorian times, gracing 'parlours' throughout the land. In milder locations Chamaedorea elegans can also be tried outdoors, surviving -6C or lower under evergreen canopy and given sufficient wrapping to protect the leaves.

Frequently asked questions about houseplants

How often should I feed my house plants?

With some house plants, you can feed them according to the label on the feed. It may look like it's not enough and you could be tempted to add more than the recommended dose, but do remember that the correct dosages will prevent the roots from getting burned from too much concentration.

As a rule of thumb, once a month, a mild solution of a balanced organic fertiliser is ideal to be applied in the growing season.

How often should I water my house plants?

Watering houseplants is always a tricky business. Some love to have their soil moist at all times, others like to be on the drier side. Also, every home is different and winters are not the same as summers.

Conditions differ throughout the year, all over the country and plants have different preferences.

Make sure you read the care instructions that come with the plant and adjust that according to your home.

GENERAL CARE

Palm trees are one of the most popular choices for indoor plants to grow. They provide the majestic beauty of a tropical garden and the ease of care. The less mature palms can be used as a desk plant for a small office and even in bathrooms of some homes.

An inevitable problem encountered by growing palms indoors is the amount of dust that builds up on the leaves over time.

WATERING

The soil in the pots should be kept moist and never be allowed to dry out. During the summer months you will be watering as much as twice per week to maintain moisture levels, whereas in winter you should water sparingly.

Plant in good condition, but the pot that arrived with it was shattered inside the packing, so I now have nothing to put the plant in. The box must have been dropped in transit.

Today I received 4 plants from the Palm Centre. I was completely over the moon with the other 3 and will submit reviews separately for those. This plant however caused me to be slightly annoyed. The plant itself is bright, bushy, beautiful, healthy, arrived perfectly and will look amazing in my house. The thing that bothers me is that the height isn’t as described (fully). I went for the bigger option in the larger pot that is meant to be taller in height too. I feel that the plant only just delivers on the height. The plant is bushy and gorgeous to look at but has literally only one very tall/long strand leaf that must meet the height requirement. Although you cannot make a plant of many stems grow in unison, i feel it’s unfair to class the plant in the higher bracket just for one leaf. I wish I’d just gone for the smaller size option, I doubt there’s much difference. Im actually in the process of buying more from the Palm Centre as the quality of their plants, delivery/handling and price points are Unbeatable. Don’t be put off buying from the Palm Centre. I haven’t, regardless of my dissatisfaction.
