How often should I feed my house plants?
With some house plants, you can feed them according to the label on the feed. It may look like it's not enough and you could be tempted to add more than the recommended dose, but do remember that the correct dosages will prevent the roots from getting burned from too much concentration.
As a rule of thumb, once a month, a mild solution of a balanced organic fertiliser is ideal to be applied in the growing season.
How often should I water my house plants?
Watering houseplants is always a tricky business. Some love to have their soil moist at all times, others like to be on the drier side. Also, every home is different and winters are not the same as summers.
Conditions differ throughout the year, all over the country and plants have different preferences.
Make sure you read the care instructions that come with the plant and adjust that according to your home.
Can I use leaf shine solutions on my prayer plant?
Do not use leaf shine products on any of the Calathea family plants. The oils in the leaf shine products will clog up the pores making it impossible for the plant to breathe.
Why do prayer plants raise their leaves at night?
The behaviour is called nyctinasty and is displayed only on few species of plants. While the exact reason is not known, the most common theory about this behaviour in prayer plants is that the leaves take the closed shape at night to allow the rain drops to fall through the leaves to the roots. It stops the rain from collecting on the leaves, preventing bacterial growth.
Are prayer plants safe to pets?
All prayer plants are considered non-toxic for people or pets, except in case of allergies. While this is the general case, you may want to avoid pets munching on the leaves as this may cause the wounds to quickly develop bacterial or fungal infections.
My prayer plant is looking sad and leaves are not "praying". What should I do?
Prayer plants are quite sensitive to environment factors. While the "praying" behaviour is displayed in most of the leaves, some older leaves may not do that.
Check the back of the leaves for pests (spider mites are a common pest!), soil for moisture, and light conditions. The easiest factor to adjust is the plant position: make sure there is enough light intensity difference between day and night.
What are spider mites and how to control them?
Prayer plants are a magnet for spider mites. They will thrive on the underside of the leaves and suck on the leaf sap. The easiest way to control them is to give your plants a full shower once a month, making sure that the water is tepid, not cold and the underside of the leaves get a good shower.
If the problem persists, a spider mite control solution can be used, like the SMC Ready mixed spray.
