Butia odorata is a spectacular fountain of elegant greyish blue-green fronds which arch gracefully above a dense broad trunk.
Established specimens of the Jelly Palm tolerate cool wet British conditions remarkably well, though may need some protection from harsh winters in colder gardens.

Plant Biography
Endemic to the dry woodlands and savannahs of South America, the Butia odorata has been know for many years as “Butia capitata var. odorata”, a subspecies of the Butia capitata. Recent studies have reclassified the palm tree under its own species name.
It’s a very compact palm tree, with long pinnate leaves that arch and recurve, forming a fountain like crown atop a thick stout trunk. It can grow to 6 m in height, with an impressive spread, albeit very slow in the UK.

Butia odorata is quite tough and hardy, though it does best in free draining soil, that’s plenty fertile, situated in full sun to part shade.
It thrives best in milder parts of the UK, and should be protected from wind if planted near the coast. Make sure to avoid any overly damp or waterlogged soil, and feed regularly.

The 7.5 L plant is a good size for the price. It has a nice blue-green colour, and elegant fronds. Properly packaged and delivered, I was very pleased. I cant wait for it to grow, but I will be making sure its well protected for the first few winters!

Real healthy looking plant delivered very well packaged, shame about the courier driver who was rude to the point if I had taken delivery and not my Wife he would have gotton more than my signature. Until the Palm Centre change their courier I shall not buy anymore plants. 5 Stars for the palm, 0 stars for delivery making 2 Stars as an average. Sorry Palm Centre you have lost a customer due to one bad courier driver.

I bought a 30ltr Jelly Palm 3 years ago from the Palm Centre and have really looked after my palm. I used the palm fertilizer and John innes compost. During the cold months I wrap the fleece around the crown only(as palm now too big! Nearly 8 foot!).

This Palm is a must for the exotic garden, as it stands up well to snow and hard frost once established. Below minus 10 I would suggest wrapping the palm in fleece to protect the growing point, but does seem to appreciate plenty of water during the summer months at this tends to produce several near fronds in one seasonal. Truly a magical palm, but make sure you plant it with plenty of space as my Butia in my Norfolk garden has now produced a decent size trunk in ten years.
