Butia odorata is a single-trunked feather palm from South America that has proved to be reasonably tolerant of cool, wet conditions, displaying some winter hardiness, often without damage. It typically has greenish grey-blue, strongly arching leaves with their leaflets held in a pronounced V shape, giving the palm a particular grace and elegance that belies its size. The name Jelly Palm relates to the edible fruit flesh, fibrous, sweet and remiscent of apricots, that is sometimes made into a sweet jellies and jams.

GENERAL CARE

Most palms need tropical or subtropical temperatures, but there are some suitable for planting outdoors in the British Isles. Hardy palms are invaluable as structural plants in tropical-style gardens and look effective when planted with bananas, bamboos and New Zealand flax.

PLANTING

Hardy palm trees can be planted at any time of the year, but ideally it should be done during spring and summer.

Try to dig a hole a good deal bigger than the root-ball, which should be given a good soak before planting. Back-fill the hole with a free draining mix

Water thoroughly. This will be beneficial to the establishment of the root system. If planting during a dry spell, water the hole first, allow to drain, plant, back-fill, and then water again.

Delivery location

Due to the nature of the consignments, the courier's drivers are not insured to carry goods through your property. The standard delivery location is the border of your property or the entrance of a communal space. If other arrangements need to be made, please get in touch with us as soon as the order is placed.
Vouchers and small boxes can be posted through the letterbox, provided there is unrestricted access to it.

Pot sizes

With items such as ferns, juvenile tree ferns and herbaceous plants it is difficult to give the exact size of each species when such a wide range of plants are grown so we specify standard pot sizes to give an indication of the size and/or age of the plant you are buying.

Sometimes the pot size might vary slightly from the standard or we might listed as 2-3 litre pot, depending on the growers we purchased them from. However, the sizes of the plants are similar in height and spread.

Sometimes the plants might be photographed in decorative pots. However, please bear in mind that our plants are kept in plastic nursery pots.

Plant height

For the outdoor plants, that are meant to be planted in the ground, the height of the pot is excluded from the measurement. The height is measured from the top of the pot to the tallest leaf or branch of the plant.

All plants are measured when brought to our nursery, however, due to natural factors, the actual size of the plant might change over time due to adjustments to the environment. When picking multiple plants for an order, we aim to pick matching plants.

butia odorata

requested two identical palms to go either side of a doorway. The palms were very good and the delivery equally. They arrived on time, which was lucky as we were due on holiday from the Monday.
I think Butia will withstand temps of -7 or -8 for a short time. Not sure about -10 to -12 as claimed!

I ordered a Butia Odorata (used to be Capitata) in a 15 ltr pot. I also phoned to check stock and ask if the plant was in good condition. It arrived by noon next day! A super specimen, in excellent condition looking fresh as a daisy (...well as a palm). A very good sized plant too. Nice people to deal with and wouldn't hesitate to use again. Recommended.

We purchased the 150cm 30cm trunk size. The palm is stunning, looks unlike any other palm, with gorgeous curving silvery green fronds. Looks lovely just as it is in the pot. Would highly recommend the Palm Centre, after several pleasing purchases. Thank you

The 7.5 L plant is a good size for the price. It has a nice blue-green colour, and elegant fronds. Properly packaged and delivered, I was very pleased. I can't wait for it to grow, but I will be making sure it's well protected for the first few winters!

Real healthy looking plant delivered very well packaged, shame about the courier driver who was rude to the point if I had taken delivery and not my Wife he would have gotton more than my signature. Until the Palm Centre change their courier I shall not buy anymore plants. 5 Stars for the palm, 0 stars for delivery making 2 Stars as an average. Sorry Palm Centre you have lost a customer due to one bad courier driver.

I bought a 30ltr Jelly Palm 3 years ago from the Palm Centre and have really looked after my palm. I used the palm fertilizer and John innes compost. During the cold months I wrap the fleece around the crown only(as palm now too big! Nearly 8 foot!).

This Palm is a must for the exotic garden, as it stands up well to snow and hard frost once established. Below minus 10 I would suggest wrapping the palm in fleece to protect the growing point, but does seem to appreciate plenty of water during the summer months at this tends to produce several near fronds in one seasonal. Truly a magical palm, but make sure you plant it with plenty of space as my Butia in my Norfolk garden has now produced a decent size trunk in ten years.
