Worldwide, Black bamboo is the most frequently cultivated species of bamboo. There is good reason for this - it is one of the most ornamental. When well grown the older culms are glossy jet-black: a rare colour in the plant world and much sought after in planting schemes.
Beware, though, that Phyllostachys nigra can be something of a Cinderella and rather variable according to its growing conditions.
Plants in dry positions in full sun can look miserable with burnt leaves and stunted canes. Plants enjoying a position in good light, out of wind in a rich, well-drained soil can be fully 8m tall. They are worth pampering!

Bamboos can be grown almost anywhere, but avoid excessively windy locations. Many can be grown in sun or shade (sun is usually best for colour).Bamboos are generally shallow rooted and prefer a rich, moisture retentive, organic soil.
Before planting out, the roots should be soaked in water for some time, and after planting it is important that the plant is watered well.
Hardy species of bamboo which were grown in pots can be planted anytime during the year, except in frozen ground.
The plants were as described, however, one of them dried. I don't know why because they were well packaged, maybe during the transportation. However, it was quickly replaced with another healthy one.<br /> Excellent customer services. Thanks.
The best service possible. Very friendly staff on the phone to help answer my questions before and after purchasing and they even delayed delivery while I was on holiday. The plant arrived superbly wrapped and was such a joy unpacking it to find a beautiful healthy specimen. It has now been repotted and is taking pride of place on my patio. Will definitely be using The Palm Centre again.
Received my plant in excellent condition and extremely healthy. I had recently purchased one from homebase before knowing about the palm centre and realised that was a huge mistake! The bamboofrom the palm centre is absolutely gorgeous and clearly so well taken care of. I highly recommend them and wished I had purchased all my bamboo plants from them!
I am absolutely delighted with my bamboo and very very impressed with the customer service, a minor shipping issue was resolved quickly, courteously and with a degree of professionalism other web supplier would do well to emulate. I have recommended The palm Centre to many of my friends and I look forward to purchasing more impressive specimens from them.
