Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Fargesia ‘Volcano’ prefers partial shade to full sun. It can tolerate some shade, but for optimal growth and density, provide it with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It thrives in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged, as excessive waterlogging can lead to root rot.

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Ensure the mulch is not in direct contact with the bamboo’s stems to prevent potential rotting.

Fargesia nitida x murielae ‘Volcano’ is a clumping bamboo and does not spread aggressively like running bamboos. However, if you wish to contain its growth, consider installing a root barrier around the planting area.

Expert Tip

Fargesia nitida x murielae 'Volcano' is known for its remarkable ability to withstand cold winter temperatures. This bamboo hybrid is particularly cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. Its resilience makes it an excellent choice for gardens and landscapes in regions with harsh winter climates, where other bamboo species may struggle to survive.

Feeding Fargesia plants

All bamboo plants are heavy feeders and periodic application of fertiliser is highly recommended to keep the plants thriving.

Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
