Temple bamboo is very distinctive in its growth habit - bolt upright with short side branches and large dense foliage give it a real fox-brush appearance. It is one of the tallest bamboos it is possible to grow in the UK, yet it remains fairly compact around the base with just occasionally straying rhizomes from the main clump that can be easily controlled. It is a perfect bamboo to provide a large vertical accent in a corner or even as a tall, wind-proof screen but arguably at its best simply enjoyed as a lawn specimen where the dramatic 'punctuation mark' form can be fully appreciated.

Bamboos can be grown almost anywhere, but avoid excessively windy locations. Many can be grown in sun or shade (sun is usually best for colour).Bamboos are generally shallow rooted and prefer a rich, moisture retentive, organic soil.
Before planting out, the roots should be soaked in water for some time, and after planting it is important that the plant is watered well.
Hardy species of bamboo which were grown in pots can be planted anytime during the year, except in frozen ground.
