The genus Sasa is a mixed bag. Some species are amongst the finest tropical-looking foliage plants you can grow yet others rank amongst the most pernicious weeds it is possible to introduce into the garden. Slow to establish, they lull the grower into a false sense of security, all the while making impenetrable bunkers underground. Sasa veitchii is moderately invasive, forming a dense dark green carpet of glossy 25cm leaves. In winter the leaf margins wither and turn straw coloured, giving a seasonally variegated effect - usefull in the right setting. Can be sheared to ground level annually to keep neat - 'Caveat Emptor'!

GENERAL CARE

Bamboos can be grown almost anywhere, but avoid excessively windy locations. Many can be grown in sun or shade (sun is usually best for colour).Bamboos are generally shallow rooted and prefer a rich, moisture retentive, organic soil.

PLANTING

Before planting out, the roots should be soaked in water for some time, and after planting it is important that the plant is watered well.

Hardy species of bamboo which were grown in pots can be planted anytime during the year, except in frozen ground.
