Plant Biography

Aster dumosus, commonly known as New York aster, is native to North America, specifically the north-eastern United States and eastern Canada. The plant was first discovered in the New York region, which inspired its common name. It was formally described and classified by botanist Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. With its charming daisy-like flowers and adaptability to various growing conditions, Aster dumosus has become a popular ornamental plant, valued for its late-season blooms that add vibrant colours to gardens and landscapes.

This pollinator-friendly variety attracts butterflies and adds an ethereal touch to borders, rock gardens, and containers.  Fine foliage creates a neat rounded form, topped with a glorious cloud of small soft blue flowers in Autumn.  Less rangy than some Aster varieties but just as hardy, it makes an attractive display at the front of a large border in sun or part shade. Easily propagated by division in Spring.

With low-maintenance requirements and excellent adaptability, Aster dumosus ‘Lady In Blue’ remains a cherished choice among gardeners, ensuring enduring beauty as the season draws to a close. Elevate your garden with the allure of ‘Lady In Blue’ – an irresistible and vibrant aster variety.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

In late-autumn, cut back and cover with a thick mulch before the first frost as this will help protect new shoots from winter damage.

This plant tends to become quite vigorous over time so it is a good idea to lift and divide it every few years to give room to the new growth in spring. This has the added bonus of providing you with extra plants!
