Plant Biography

Asplenium scolopendrium is native to Europe and is widespread in most of the UK, other than in the north. In the wild it can be found on moist banks, walls and rocks in damp and shady places in woodlands.

The common name ‘Hart’s Tongue Fern’ comes from the shape of the fronds resembling the tongue of a ‘hart’ – the old English word for a male red deer.

This fern’s upright pointed fronds are brilliant for creating contrast between the softer shapes of other plants in a shaded spot in the garden.
