Plant Biography

Alchemilla mollis is a herbaceous perennial much used in cottage style gardening but a compatible companion plant for any situation. Grown as ground cover, this will soon spread slowly and informally as self-set seedlings, softening path edges and smudging drifts in borders.

The puckered parasol-like leaves retain moisture droplets after rainfall like beads of mercury – worth venturing outdoors to see. Frothy stems of greenish-yellow flowers are produced for most of the summer, after which the dead flowers and most of the foliage can be cut back whereupon a second flush is often produced.

Historically used as a herb to promote sleep, and also to collect rainwater for alchemy!

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Alchemilla mollis is very easy to grow in most conditions. It prefers a damp soil with a bit of sun, but will survive in most conditions.

Around end of June or beginning of July (as soon as the first flowering is over), and again once towards the end of the season, it’s recommended to give it a hard cut back to keep it in check. This will prevent it from takin over neighbouring plants and give it space to push new foliage.

Plant Trivia

The plant is covered in soft hairs that catch and hold rain drops and dew. These droplets of water were considered by the alchemists the purest form of water, therefore the name 'Alchemilla'.
