Libertia grandiflora is a slightly tender evergreen perennial plant that forms a clump of erect linear green leaves.

Tall stems of clear white 3 petalled flowers are produced in spring and summer, followed by conspicuous seed capsules in autumn. This makes an excellent coastal plant but requires a deep mulch if grown in colder inland spot.

Drought tolerant and long-lived once established, it makes a cool vertical accent for gravel gardens.

Plant Biography

Libertia grandiflora a species in the Iris family and it is endemic to New Zealand, but it has found its place in prairie like gardens all over the world. The Libertia genus contains 8 distinct species and is the only one in the Iris family originating in New Zealand.

It was named after Marie-Anne Libert, a Belgian botanist, one of the first women to study plant pathologies.

Libertia grandiflora is not very fussy when it comes to planting: a well drained soil and full sun to part shade position will make it happy. Once established, the plant can cope really well with drier conditions.

Plant in mid-spring in moist soil in a sheltered position. Ultimately, the plant should be used as a textural addition to a border, as it’s leaves are the main focus.

Divide the plants in Spring by digging up the whole plant, and pulling the roots apart into sections to be replanted straight away.

Expert Tip

Though cold hardy in most parts of the UK, a thick layer of mulch of bark is recommended in winter to protect the plant when in open spaces.

The plants appear to be in good condition and I look forward to seeing them once they mature. However, despite carefully packaged the transportation was not . One was upside down, loss of compost and an imploded pot. I informed the Palm Centre and received a prompt reply.
