Echinacea purpurea ‘alba’, commonly known as white coneflower, is a cultivar of the species Echinacea purpurea. The original species, Echinacea purpurea, is native to North America, particularly the central and eastern regions of the United States. The exact origin of the white-flowered cultivar ‘Alba’ is not well-documented, but it likely originated from natural variations or selective breeding of the purple-flowered Echinacea purpurea.
With the recent rise in popularity of ‘prairie planting’ Echinacea purpurea is enjoying a surge of interest. And understandably – it is a tough perennial with a long season of interest and, when established, incredibly drought tolerant. Coarse leaves fuel the flowers: strong hairy stems carry the ‘cone flowers’, radiating stars of ivory-white with a raised central boss of orange-brown. These make wonderful cut flowers if grown for the purpose, otherwise leave them to adorn the garden for weeks. A single plant in the garden looks great. A drift is incredible. Echinacea purpurea ‘Alba’ is a little shorter than the species.
