Summer sale at the Palm Centre – latest on road works in the area and update on how to get to us

It’s time for our summer sale at the Palm Centre and we are ready to offer our customers up to 50% off on all our plants. The sale will start on August 1st, and all of our colleagues will be happy to help you pick the plants you need according to our regular schedule.

road worksIf you are thinking of coming over to have a look in our nursery, please be aware Petersham Road will be closed from August 1st until early September, due to the National Grid carrying out essential gas main replacement works around this area.

This will mainly affect you if you’re coming from Richmond as Petersham Road will be closed to all traffic from the junction with Star and Garter Hill, up to the traffic lights outside 149 Petersham Road. There will be a physical road closure from outside 141 to 143 Petersham Road.

Pedestrians and cyclists
Pedestrians and cyclists will have access along the whole of Petersham Road during the works as normal. Cyclists are required to dismount.

An alternative route from Richmond is along the river. It a 20 minutes’ walk from Richmond and you can enjoy beautiful scenery, if the weather allows.

Arriving by car

If you’re coming from Richmond follow the diversion through Richmond Park. However if you’re coming from Kingston you shouldn’t have any problem to get to the nursery.

Getting here by bus

Route 65 and N65 will be diverted via Teddington, Twickenham and Richmond.

Route 371 will not run and will be replaced by a split service 565, 571 and 572. Please check the TfL website for more information or download a map of the services running

We recommend you to ask to the bus driver before you get on the bus for more information.

Keeping a gardening journal can be very useful

Gardening is a pretty physical job that can be really rewarding and fun, even more so if you keep a gardening journal.

When you keep a gardening journal you have a historical record of your actions; it is agreat tool for keeping records of previous year’s bounty and failures, thus helping you to improve your efforts and skills over time.

Gardening JournalPhalinn Ool – Creative Commons

You can record every activity you perform in your garden like watering, fertilizing, trimming, winter protection, your transplanting dates and weather particulars such as rainfall, frost dates and results. The sources and cost of your plants, a sketch of your garden from season to season and even pictures can also be included. It’s actually up to you how much information you keep.

There are many ways to do this: you can use a common notebook, a specialized garden notebook, a spreadsheet, your computer or even some gardening journal apps for your mobile.

And if you feel that you need some extra help for the care of your plants and a detailed description of their growth, you can visit our website’s sections:

40 years old Eucalyptus tree comes crashing down.

Last Saturday, high winds and strong rain in the Richmond area brought severe damage to The Palm Centre. Three of our Eucalyptus trees fell down and one of them fell into the propagation greenhouse.

All visitor parking in the nursery has been closed for the last few days, although customers can come in by foot.  The tree pictured is finally being cleared today so the nursery will be open as normal from tomorrow. The glass house will need some extensive repair but this will not affect our regular business.

We feel proud to be part of the Chelsea’s 100 years history!

Chelsea Flower show 2013 will start tomorrow the 21st of May and will finish Saturday the 25th of May, so don’t miss it!

But this year will be a special event as they celebrate the 1913-2013 Chelsea’s centenary with beautiful garden shows and a display of 100 years in pictures.

The Palm Centre feels really proud to be part of the Chelsea flower show history and this is not just because we have regularly supply the Chelsea show with lots of plants like ferns, grasses and herbaceous plants for years, but because the Palm Centre has won two Gold Medals, in 1989 and in 2011.

bamboos

The first Gold medal was with a novelty great palm display when the Palm Centre was itself a young seedling of a business, when even the Times declared on its front page “Palms Make a Comeback at Chelsea“.

The second Gold medal was awarded when Martin Gibbons decided to enter giant bamboos surrounded by rare and unusual ferns display. The design of the stand was to be two square tiers and the location of the stand was brilliant in the Great Pavilion. It was hard work, lots of late nights and early mornings but in the end was richly rewarded by the Gold Medal that we now proudly display in our Sales Office where it creates much interest from our customers.

As Martin says “While we are not at the Chelsea Flower Show in person this year, we are certainly there in spirit as the Show celebrates its 100th Birthday. It is a wonderful institution, one that we feel proud to have been a part of in the past, and who knows, maybe in the future too“.

Have you seen this van in the street? We now deliver in our new van and we like it!

Recently the Palm Centre put its new delivery van on the road.  Our aim is to offer the best service we can and deliver the lovely plants we sell with the care and attention they deserve.

Currently most of the deliveries are within the M25 area, we can go further afield but for smaller orders it’s more economical to use a nationwide delivery company.

After the plants have been wrapped and ready to ship, our driver will deliver them in perfect condition and on time, thanks to our new van.

So next time you see this van in the street say hello to the driver or honk your horn at him! That would mean you know The Palm Centre and you like our van too!
